After two years of searching, Safe and Sound identifies 8 Bold Lane as an ideal location to create a dedicated hub for youth support, outreach, and community engagement.

Engaging with young people, parents, professionals, and local businesses, Safe and Sound gathers insights to shape the vision of the new hub and ensure it meets the needs of the community.

A survey conducted by Derby Youth Alliance, with 580 responses, highlights an overwhelming need for youth centres, creative spaces, and structured activities, reinforcing the importance of the project.

With funding from the Community Ownership Fund and generous supporters, Safe and Sound successfully purchases the building, marking a huge step forward in creating a safe space for young people.

Work begins on planning the new space, with young people and families actively involved in shaping the facilities and ensuring the hub truly reflects their needs.

After careful selection, Davlyn is appointed to carry out the refurbishment, bringing the vision of a dedicated support hub to life.

Construction officially kicks off! The space starts its transformation into a safe, welcoming, and fully equipped hub. In November we managed to recycle the old tables and chairs to a local pub and in December we unfortunatley struck a leak but powered through.

With change-of-use approval secured, the final steps are put in place to get the hub ready for opening. Excitement builds as the vision nears completion!

Featuring a new family kitchen, dedicated relaxation areas, and diverse activity stations, the facility at Bold Lane provides a comprehensive and welcoming space for young people and families to access essential help and support.

We celebrated a resounding success following the official opening of the new city centre hub, Melbourne House, on Bold Lane. The special occasion drew a full house of supporters, partners, funders, and community representatives – all gathered to witness a defining milestone in the charity’s history.

Almost a year later several partner organisations are holding workshops and sessions within our building. We use our therapy and one to one room for support work with our young people. We have regular cooking and games sessions and have two weekly open evenings on Mondays and Thursdays. Our parent peer group, LGBTQ+ and youth voice groups meet there.
